Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 2026

Overview

Scribely is designed with privacy as a core principle. All audio processing and transcription happens locally on your device. We do not collect, store, or transmit your meeting audio to any external server.

Data We Process Locally

The following data is processed entirely on your Mac:

  • Meeting audio captured via microphone, system audio, or Chrome extension
  • Transcription output generated by local Whisper AI models
  • Meeting recordings saved to your local filesystem
  • Chat conversations with the AI assistant

None of this data leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to export it.

Data Sent to External Services

When you use the AI chat feature, text-based queries (not audio) are sent to OpenAI's API for processing. This includes:

  • Your chat messages
  • Relevant transcript excerpts for context

Audio data is never sent externally. Only text derived from local transcription is shared with the AI service when you actively use the chat feature.

Chrome Extension

The Scribely Chrome extension captures tab audio and streams it exclusively to localhost (127.0.0.1:9876) — your own machine. No audio data is sent to any external server by the extension.

Data Storage

Meeting transcripts and recordings are stored locally in ~/Documents/Scribely/recordings/. Your API key is encrypted using macOS Keychain (Electron safeStorage). Application settings are stored locally via electron-store.

Analytics & Telemetry

Scribely does not include any analytics, telemetry, or tracking in the desktop application or Chrome extension. We do not collect usage data, crash reports, or any other information about how you use the product.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
